Proper Care for Your Eyes

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body produces and uses the hormone insulin, which regulates how your body processes sugar. Over time, diabetes can increase your risk of developing a degenerative eye disease, impacting your overall vision and ocular health.

If you have diabetes, you will probably be aware of the risks associated with the condition and eye health. Attending regular eye exams can play a significant role in protecting your vision, and at Northern Vision Care, we are here to help.

Your eyes are the only place in the body where a doctor can see your blood vessels. In some cases, your optometrist may be able to detect the first signs of diabetes before an official diagnosis. If you would like to book an appointment, please give us a call or use our online booking form at your convenience!

Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a degenerative eye disease that occurs when the tiny blood vessels in the back of the eye become damaged due to elevated blood glucose levels. Damaged blood vessels can swell, burst, and leak blood and other fluid onto the retina, causing scarring, increased intraocular pressure, and impaired vision.

Early stages of diabetic retinopathy, called nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy, occurs when the damaged blood vessels begin to weaken and leak fluids. As the disease progresses into proliferative diabetic retinopathy, the blood vessels can close off, triggering new, abnormal blood vessels to grow on the retina. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy is severe and can lead to permanent damage and even blindness.

Diabetic Macular Edema

Diabetic macular edema occurs as a result of untreated diabetic retinopathy. The leakage from the damaged blood vessels in the eye causes the central part of the retina, called the macula, and the surrounding tissues to swell. The swelling can deteriorate the macula, responsible for central vision, and cause central vision loss.

Diagnosing Diabetic Eye Disease

At Northern Vision Care, we use state-of-the-art technology to detect, diagnose, and treat various conditions related to diabetes. During your eye exam, we may include a few diagnostic tests to assess your eye health and pinpoint any early signs of diabetic eye disease.

Optical coherence tomography is a noninvasive imaging test that takes cross-sectional images of your retina, giving us a detailed look at its distinctive layers. These high-resolution images allow us to evaluate each layer’s thickness and detect abnormalities that could indicate early signs of disease.

Fundus photography is the process of taking high-resolution images of your retina through your pupil. We will likely dilate your pupils for this exam, in which case you will need a ride home, but we will be sure to let you know well before your appointment.

The tool we use is a specialized low-power microscope attached to a camera that will give us a clear view of the optic disc, retina, and lens.
