Regular Eye Care Protects Your Eyes Throughout Your Life

Even if you have strong, stable eyesight, regular eye exams are essential for preventive health care. Comprehensive eye exams update your current eyeglass prescription, assess your overall ocular health, and detect health concerns, like diabetes, high blood pressure, or brain tumors.

At Northern Vision Care, our optometrist in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek invest in the latest diagnostic technology to provide you with thorough and accurate eye care. This technology allows us to detect the earliest signs of eye conditions and diseases that can impact your vision and quality of life.

Many eye diseases progress with no symptoms, meaning they can damage your eyes and impact your vision before you are even aware you have one. An eye exam is vital to detect these diseases before they cause irreversible vision loss.

How Often Should You Have an Eye Exam?

We follow the recommended exam frequency set by the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO), which states that:

  • Adults between 20 to 39 should undergo an eye examination every 2 to 3 years.
  • Adults between 40 to 64 should undergo an eye examination every 2 years.
  • Adults over 65 should undergo an eye examination annually.

Children should also undergo regularly scheduled eye exams based on their visual milestones. Please check out our children’s eye exam page for more information.

While this frequency schedule is helpful, everyone is unique. Our optometrists may recommend a different schedule based on your ocular needs.

Ageing & the Eyes

You probably noticed that the CAO recommends more frequent eye exams for adults over a certain age. This frequency is because our eyes may begin to deteriorate around the early to mid-40s, becoming more susceptible to age-related eye conditions and diseases that affect vision. These changes affect your:

The cells that control your colour vision become less sensitive, making it more difficult to distinguish some colours and shades.

It can take 2 to 3 times longer for your eyes to adapt to changing light conditions than it did when you were younger.

The tear glands in your eyes produce fewer tears as you get older. This lack of lubrication can lead to painful and irritating dry eyes.

As you age, your pupils become less responsive to low light conditions, meaning you require more light to see clearly than when you were younger.

Everyone eventually develops presbyopia. This eye condition occurs when your eye’s lens loses its ability to flex, which is required to focus on objects at varying distances. This inflexibility makes nearby objects appear out of focus.

As you grow older, you become more susceptible to age-related eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.
